He currently serves on the Board as the Executive Director and Chair of the Board.
In his earlier years, Randall competed in triathlons at an elite world–class level for 10 years. He was a member of the United States Triathlon Team USA competing in the Triathlon World Championships in 1992 and 1993. As a member of Team USA, he was awarded a Gold Medal at the 1993 Triathlon World Championships in Manchester, England. A veteran of over 125 triathlons since 1984, he earned an international reputation as a driven, competitive, and talented triathlete. Randall made triathlon history in 1988 as the youngest athlete (at that time) to qualify for the United States Triathlon Series (USTS) National Championships at the age of 15. Four years later he won the division becoming a National Champion at the 1992 USTS National Championships. He has qualified for the Duathlon National Championships and the Boston Marathon and competed in the Alcatraz Challenge Triathlon, the 1992 World Championships in Muskoka Lakes, Canada, the 1993 World Championships in Manchester, England, Napa Valley Marathon, The Vancouver Triathlon, Vineman International, Wildflower long and short courses, as well as many other triathlon circuit races. Randall has swum across the San Francisco Bay from Alcatraz Island to San Francisco four times – the first time at age 14. He officially retired from the sport in 1993 and gets on the bicycle or heads out for a cross country run sporadically. Randall is an avid snowshoe and cross country skiing aficionado.
Randall takes his experience as an elite athlete to work with him as a coach with the Special Olympics. He specifically works with his athletes to eliminate barriers that inhibit their true potential, and incorporates a coaching style based specifically on the unique characteristics of the athlete. Randall is a firm believer in each athlete’s innate ability to accomplish any goal they set out to meet. “My favorite aspect of working with Special Olympics athletes is their incredible imagination to achieve and their belief in themselves – if we all had this self esteem and determination there is no telling what social problems would be solved.”
Randall is an advisory councilmember for the Independent Living Services of Northern California's annual “Pirate Palooza” philanthropy. Together with his wife Krista (K6KEG), Randall is a licensed General class Amateur Radio operator and is the President of the Golden Empire Amateur Radio Society (GEARS) as well as a volunteer with the Butte and Glenn County Amateur Radio Emergency Service (ARES). These two non-profit organizations work with the Office of Emergency Services and the California Blood Bank Society to coordinate emergency communications in the event of a regional disaster. GEARS is a public service organization that provides volunteer radio communications at local events throughout the year. “Disaster preparation is essential in this post 9/11 and post Katrina era.” Providing the building blocks for emergency readiness, Randall participates in statewide Simulated Emergency Tests with a variety of public service organizations. He is an accredited Disaster Communications Worker with the Butte County Sheriff’s Communication Reserve. He has donated over 3 gallons of blood to local blood banks in recent years as well as recently being listed as a volunteer donor with the National Marrow Donor Program.
Randall has installed and implemented an APRS digipeater system to track users of tactical groups through amateur radio for use as a hobby, in tactical communication networks, and emergency uses as well as superimpose real time Doppler radar data on the track. As an American Radio Relay League Registered Instructor, Randall is a regular speaker at amateur radio events and meetings, particularly focusing on new technology amateur radio tools such as the Internet Radio Linking Project (IRLP), Automatic Position Reporting System (APRS), and EchoLink®. In his spare time, he enjoys snowshoeing, cross country skiing, hiking, target shooting, and “working” other continents through amateur radio, either at home, on backcountry snow camping trips, or on a private 40 acre swath in the Mendocino Forest.
Krista and Randall are both California Domestic Violence Crisis Intervention Counselors, members of the Butte County League of Women Voters, the Special Olympics Walk for the Gold committee and many other non-profit organizations throughout Butte County. In the past, Randall has been a member of the Government Activities Committee of the Butte County League of Women Voters which works with local government to educate the community on the activities of the various local government entities. Randall has lived in Chico since 1995. He and Krista have a Beagle named “Buddy” and a chocolate Labrador retriever “Rocko”, named after the CSU, Chico Economics Department computer server.
Randall's motto and mission is to make an increasingly positive impact and improve the quality of life for all Chico and Butte County residents. “I literally wake up in the morning and set out to outdo myself and my performance the previous day. In triathlons we call this type of continuous improvement a 'negative split'. I call it a positive split.”
