I just recently got back into the hobby after a hiatus of almost 25 years. Ham Radio has certainly changed considerably during that time and I think for the better! Certainly the equipment has improved :) I just bought a new Yaesu FTDX-5000 transceiver that I consider one of the best on the market, bar none. Although I thought my FT-1000 MKV was a great transceiver, there is no comparison to the 5000. My antenna is a 3-el SteppIR up 72 feet on a US Tower TX-472 crank-up.
