Brazilian Naval Academy at Rio de Janeiro

The Escola Naval is the oldest college institution in Brazil. Its origins go back to the founding of the Royal Guard of the Marine, in 1782, at the Palace Square in Lisbon, with the task of training the officers of the Portuguese Royal Navy. After the Napoleonic invasion of Portugal in 1807, the Portuguese Royal Academy of Navy was transferred to Rio de Janeiro in 1808. With the independence of Brazil (1822), the institution became known as ESCOLA NAVAL.

Today, the Escola Naval is the main Academy of the Brazilian Navy, located in Rio de Janeiro, on Villegagnon Island just inside the Guanabara Bay. The Brazilian Naval Academy is an institution of college education, which aims to form officers to the Brazilian Navy. To celebrate its foundation, every year the Navy promotes the traditional Escola Naval Regatta, the largest sailing race in Latin America.

ESCOLA NAVAL

A Escola Naval é a mais antiga instituição de ensino de nível superior do Brasil. Foi criada em 1782, em Lisboa, Portugal, por Carta Régia da Rainha D. Maria I sob a denominação de Acadêmia Real de Guardas-Marinha. Com a vinda da Família Real para o Brasil, a Acadêmia desembarcou no Rio de Janeiro em 1808, trazida a bordo da nau "Conde D. Henrique". Instalada primeiramente no Mosteiro de São Bento, lá permaneceu até 1832, e a partir daí sofreu inúmeras mudanças de instalações, tendo funcionado inclusive a bordo de navios. Finalmente, em 1938, a ESCOLA NAVAL veio fixar-se na Ilha de Villegagnon.
